EMDR
Reprocess Trauma for Freedom & Relief
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a gold-standard trauma therapy in our Division—using bilateral stimulation to reprocess distressing memories and reduce their impact. Highly effective for PTSD/trauma, virtual sessions integrated with STARR.
History & Science
Developed by Francine Shapiro in 1987 (observing eye movements reduced distress), EMDR’s Adaptive Information Processing model reconsolidates trauma: Bilateral stimulation (eye movements, taps, tones) mimics REM sleep, shifting “stuck” memories from amygdala/hippocampus freeze to resolved prefrontal integration—updating beliefs/emotions without prolonged exposure.
Benefits
- Rapid reduction in trauma triggers/flashbacks.
- Effective for PTSD, anxiety, phobias—often fewer sessions than talk therapy.
- Empowers adaptive beliefs (“I am safe now”).
How We Use It at Regional Psychiatry
Virtual with guided stimulation; blended with STARR somatic tools (e.g., breathwork for grounding) and Brainspotting for deeper access.
