History & Science

Developed by Steven Hayes in the 1980s as part of the “third wave” of behavioral therapies, ACT draws from relational frame theory—how language shapes suffering. It promotes psychological flexibility via 6 core processes (acceptance, defusion, present moment, self-as-context, values, committed action). For trauma, ACT facilitates reconsolidation by “defusing” from painful memories (observing without fusion), reducing avoidance and allowing new, values-aligned responses to overwrite old patterns—engaging prefrontal cortex to modulate limbic reactivity.
