Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) | Regional Psychiatry

Rapid Relief from Trauma Through Image Rescripting

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a brief, evidence-based trauma therapy in our Division that uses bilateral eye movements and voluntary image rescripting to quickly reduce the emotional and physical distress linked to traumatic or disturbing memories. Highly effective for PTSD, anxiety, phobias, and other trauma-related issues, ART often produces meaningful results in just a few sessions and integrates seamlessly with our STARR-informed approach.

History & Science

Developed in 2008 by Laney Rosenzweig, ART is a directive, protocol-driven therapy that combines imaginal exposure with voluntary image replacement. Using smooth pursuit eye movements, ART helps clients process distressing memories while actively replacing negative or traumatic images with more positive or neutral ones chosen by the client. This process supports memory reconsolidation, allowing the factual memory to remain while significantly reducing the emotional and somatic charge attached to it. Research, including randomized controlled trials and studies with veterans and civilians, has shown ART to be effective in reducing PTSD symptoms, often in 1–5 sessions.

Benefits

  • Rapid reduction in trauma-related distress, flashbacks, and nightmares
  • Often effective in fewer sessions than traditional talk therapy or EMDR
  • Minimal requirement to verbally recount traumatic details
  • Helps replace distressing images with more adaptive ones
  • Effective for PTSD, anxiety, phobias, grief, and performance-related distress
  • Well-tolerated and suitable for both single-incident and complex trauma

How We Use It at Regional Psychiatry

ART is delivered virtually by our trained clinicians using guided eye movements and the structured ART protocol. It works particularly well for clients who want efficient, targeted relief from specific distressing memories or images. Our therapists often integrate ART with other modalities such as EMDR, Brainspotting, or somatic coaching when clinically appropriate, creating a personalized and comprehensive treatment experience.
